When Two Worlds Collide...

With so many online shopping websites that we keep at our fingertips and all the stores that we wander into, let me ask you a question. How many times has a ring, a bangle or a necklace made you gasp, drop your jaw or stop you in your tracks? I’m talking eyes turning into hearts, Roger Rabbit style when he first saw Jessica Rabbit. Well, this is EXACTLY what happened to me when I came across Daj Darya Jewelry.

Daj Darya Jewelry by Liat Topel is unlike anything I’ve seen before. It is all handmade by Liat herself and mixes luxurious silks and other fabrics with gold and silver. Her maternal grandfather was an Iranian who owned a luxury fashion textile business, before closing shop and moving to Israel, while her paternal grandfather was a Polish jeweler. Liat is a fusion of both of these worlds and it’s truly magic.

I had the pleasure of talking with Liat and these are some of the questions I had for her:

Sababa and the City: What made you want to become a jewelry designer?

Liat Topel: I came to this profession by mistake. After fixing a piece of jewelry that was broken, I was curious with goldsmithing so I went to study it. After a few months I found an enchanted world and then started to combine the two worlds I come from - Textile and Jewelry (My two grandfather's professions).

SATC: Where do you get the inspiration for each of your collections?

Liat: I come from a family of home textiles such as Missoni, Etro, Dedar ect. My inspiration comes from the textiles I breathe every day for the past almost 30 years. Furthermore, I get my inspiration from the urban city wherever I go - Tel Aviv, Milan, Rome, New York, Hong Kong...

SATC: Is everything custom or are some of your pieces made to order?

Liat: I have a collection that I made and can be seen and bought on the website. Also, I make custom pieces for clients in special orders. Whether it’s a gift for a special friend or for a special event (to go along with a dress) or just to spoil yourself with an exclusive piece that no one else has. It’s important that all the jewelry you wear makes you feel unique.

SATC: How do you define, “sababa”?

Liat: When I think about the word SABABA what comes to my mind are fun vibes, positive and energetic.
